Peninsula’s solo presentation at the 14 edition of Untitled Art, Miami Beach showcases Mike Olin’s use of the color white in combination with an eclectic array of found mixed media. Within these paintings, white is implemented as the element in which the rest of the artwork is built upon. On this stark backdrop, Olin embeds and affixes debris, which becomes an accumulated texture on the picture plane for Olin to smear thin washes of paint.
Together, these components congeal into a grungy, controlled chaos. Every imperfection and fleck of grime within the collaged scraps is highlighted by the white within the painting. The minutiae and previously nearly imperceptible details within Olin’s assembled materials are brought to the forefront. Olin magnifies and fashions the connections among the blemishes in these simple discarded materials to produce a lively, vast ecosystem. Interactions between all these disparate parts form an environment that vacillates between discord and harmony, familiar yet ascendant all at once.
