Loie Holowell

Loie Hollowell earned a BFA from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and an MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University. Originating in autobiography, her paintings explore themes of sexuality, often through abstractions of the human body and an emphasis on female forms. With strong colors, varied texture, and the symmetry of sacred geometry, her works evoke bodily landscapes and allude to iconography such as the almond-shaped mandorlas found in medieval religious painting. Hollowell is currently represented by Pace.

Timo Fahler

Timo Fahler’s work explores ideas of use and reuse through casting and manipulating found objects and combining them with relics that relate to personal experiences. Waste recycling is an important idea in the development of a North American cultural capital, but the concept of use and reuse is more an ethos among Central American cultures; walls are comprised of mud and plastic bottles, old bicycles are transformed into washing machines, shards of broken glass find use as security devices atop privacy fences. As the son of a Mexican mother and German American father, his Chicano heritage has become the consistent material (and immaterial) investigation in his work. He translates these ideas into works by collecting items deemed disposable or recyclable and reconfiguring them into objects in which the items are divorced from their original purpose. These objects are combined with artifacts of his experience, in order to provide an experiential interpretation in which the work communicates with the senses physically, emotionally and spiritually. By restructuring these objects in a manner that indicates function and meaning while remaining abstract in form, he evokes the bricoleurian practice evident in Mexican culture, yet present work representative of a multi-cultural aesthetic.

Lars Fisk

Playing with recognizable everyday objects, Lars Fisk deconstructs and warps familiar objects into spheres. Fisk has been making spherical sculptures since 1996, when he created his first sphere, Streetball. Channeling his interest in architecture, construction, signage, consumption, storage and waste, through the fine art of sculpture, Fisk turns familiar objects into abstract symbols, questioning their very essence. The artist has worked on a number of commissions that are site-specific and were inspired by the local context.

Tamar Halpern

Tamar Halpern is a photographer whose subject is the photographic process as much as the objects captured in her images. She uses a variety of photographic technologies, both contemporary and historic, and her final prints are the result of elaborate processes involving repeated cycles of digital and manual alteration: scanning, re-photographing, printing, sponging, taping, silk-screening, and wiping. The objects in the images are frequently commonplace, and also include streetscapes and interior views. In the final images, however, the original subject is sometimes distorted and obscured beyond recognition. Halpern’s style favors dense layering of images, high contrast, texture, and saturated colors.

EJ Hauser_MajorYours_2018.jpg

EJ Hauser

EJ’s paintings and drawings employ text and figures into seemingly discursive elements. She paints seeking a narrow window where numbers, letters, figures, and symbols cohere into a singular image. These painted palimpsests hold conversations, and arguments, homage to the past and revelations of the day. Contradiction and balance are held in equal regard, grappling with expressions of identity, personal, and cultural histories.

Tashawn “Whaffle” Davis

Born and raised in Red Hook, Brooklyn, Tashawn “Whaffle” Davis is a multi-disciplinary artist who combines humor, historical reference and pop culture to explore a variety of cultural and  socio-political issues. In his paintings, Tashawn often returns to an imaginary pastoral landscape that he refers to as “Fernweh.” This rural setting provides a backdrop for surreal scenes and narratives that often include mythical creatures called “Squonks.” The Squonk - with its shapeless furry body, sad eyes and anthropomorphic qualities - creates a strange tension within the idealized landscape of Fernweh. Interspersed with references to American history and popular culture, Tashawn’s paintings create compelling seriocomic explorations of the African American experience.

Mike Olin

Mike Olin was born and raised in San Diego, CA, and he currently lives and works in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Olin’s paintings challenge our notion of a single reading. The work is an embrace of abstraction and landscape with narrative possibilities. They invite the viewer to approach and absorb the works in a variety of ways. The layering of symbols and materials, which range from painterly spidery forms, to glass shards and coins force us to read multiple signs at once creating new archetypes of signification and interpretation. Olin has shown his paintings throughout New York City for two decades.

Hester Oerlemans

The mixing of different worlds, playful interventions and commentaries on everyday reality are the main themes in the work of artist Hester Oerlemans. Leaving no medium unexploited, she consistently shows a perception of the world around her which is both poetic and critical. In drawings, videos and sculptures, she makes an effort to unravel the object until its essence shows. No matter whether she busies herself with the art world, urban space or our personal surroundings, she hits the nail on its head.

Hester lives and works in Berlin and Arnhem
